How to Make Ancient Egyptian Clothing

Whether for a Halloween costume, a school project or a simple fashion statement, ancient Egyptian clothing can sometimes be of use in our modern culture, but can be hard to find in stores. Ancient Egyptian clothing is simple enough to make. Any amateur seamstress with the right supplies can make beautifully elegant ancient Egyptian clothing for any occasion. These clothes can be dressed up or down and modified slightly to accommodate different genders, ages and sizes.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of linen that are each 2 yards long and as wide as the widest part of your body. Lay the two fabric pieces directly on top of each other, right sides of the fabric facing together.

    • 2

Sew the two pieces of linen together along the longer sides, leaving the top 6 inches of each side open for the arm holes.

    • 3

Cut a "J" shape out of each arm hole to allow more room for movement.

    • 4

Sew the top of the garment together, leaving a 6 inch opening in the middle for the collar. Cut a semi circle out of the front of the collar to allow more room for the neck.

    • 5

Cut two pieces of fabric that are each 12 inches by 10 inches. These will form the sleeves.

    • 6

Fold one of the sleeve fabric pieces in half, bringing the shorter edges together. Sew the short edges together, making a sort of tube of fabric.

    • 7

Sew one of the raw edges of the sleeve to one of the arm holes. Hem the other raw edge by folding it under 1/4 inch and sewing it in place. Repeat this process with the other sleeve.

    • 8

Hem the collar and the bottom of the garment by folding the fabric over 1/2 inch. Sew the fold in place, tucking the raw edge of the fabric under the seam as you go.

    • 9

Cut a piece of white or gold rope that is 60 inches long and tie it around your waist to secure the garment.
