How to Cover Buttons for a Wedding Gown

Covering a button for a wedding gown offers a professional element to your dress. Whether the button is meant for decoration or for use, it should be covered with the same fabric your dress is made from. The difficulty of covering a button is determined by the size of the button. If the button is large, it will be much easier to cover than a small button. It is best to practice this technique on spare buttons and with scrap fabric before attempting to cover the buttons on your wedding gown.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from the shank, a loop on the back of your button, to the edge of the button. Measure the same distance from the edge of the button and make a mark on the wrong side of your fabric. Do this again on the opposite side of your button.

    • 2

Place your protractor needle between both pen marks, making sure that the needle is centered between the marks. Place the pen tip of the protractor on the pen mark on the fabric. Turn the protractor so that you have a complete circle printed on the fabric.

    • 3

Cut out the circle of fabric. You can use this circle as a stencil to trace as many pieces as you will need to cover all your buttons.

    • 4

Thread your needle with embroidery thread. Stitch a running stitch along the edge of the fabric circle. A running stitch is performed by running the needle in and out of the fabric. You should be able to pull the thread on one side. Be sure to leave enough thread to tie a few knots.

    • 5

Place the button in the center of the circle on the wrong side of your fabric. Pull on both ends of the thread until the fabric is snug around the button.

    • 6

Tie at least two knots in the embroidery thread so that it is tight around the shank of the button. Make sure your knots can not come untied.
