How to Make a Tufted Duvet Cover

Duvet covers are nice way to change the decor in a bedroom. Rather than buying a new comforter, a person can simply cover it up with something new. Although it is much less expensive to buy a duvet cover than it is to buy a new comforter, buying a duvet cover can still be a little pricey. Fortunately, duvet covers are easy to make. To make a homemade duvet cover even more decorative, it can be tufted along the top.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out two pieces of cotton fabric that are each 5 inches wider and longer than the comforter.

    • 2

Start tufting one of the pieces of fabric 6 inches down and over from one of the corners. To tuft the fabric, insert the needle and thread into the fabric, leaving a tail of thread of about 6 inches. Pull the needle back up through the fabric about 1/2 inch away, leaving another 6 inch tail of thread. Tie both 6-inch tails of thread together tightly.

    • 3

Tuft this fabric piece every 6 inches, horizontally and vertically, forming a sort of grid of tufts. Leave the second fabric piece untufted.

    • 4

Lay the two fabric pieces on top of each other, right sides of the fabric together. Sew the pieces of fabric together along the top and both sides. Leave the bottom open.

    • 5

Hem the bottom opening of the duvet cover and turn it right side out.

    • 6

Sew a button every 12 inches along one side of the bottom opening of the duvet cover. Sew corresponding button holes along the other side of the opening.
