How to Make a Sewing Thread Holder

Making a homemade sewing thread holder can be a relatively inexpensive alternative to purchasing one, and has the added benefit of being completely customizable in size to accomodate your collection of sewing threads. Creating your own sewing thread holder is also fairly simple, and can be completed in just a couple of hours.

Things You'll Need

  • 5 2-by-2 pieces of lumber, 12 inches long
  • 2 2-by-2 pieces of lumber, 11 inches long

  • Drill with 1/16-inch bit
  • Wood glue
  • 10 3-inch wood screws

Instructions

    • 1

Drill six 1/16-inch holes into each 12-inch length of wood, 2 inches apart and about 1/4 inch deep.

    • 2

Screw one 11-inch piece of wood to one 12-inch piece of wood to create a right angle, with the screw going through the side of the 11-inch piece into the 12-inch piece. Screw the other 11-inch piece to the opposite end in the same manner.

    • 3

Measure 1/4 inch from the bottom edge of the 12-inch piece, and screw another 12-inch piece in between the 11-inch side pieces. Repeat this process with the remaining 12-inch pieces until you have an 11-inch-by-12-inch rectangle, with three center slats. Make sure all of the holes you drilled in step one are facing the same side.

    • 4

Dab a bit of wood glue into one of the 1/16-inch drill holes, and insert a 2-inch piece of dowel rod. Continue this process with all of the drill holes, and allow the glue to dry completely.

    • 5

Stain or finish the sewing thread holder if desired, allowing it to dry completely. Insert your spools of thread onto the dowel rods for storage.
