How to Make a Purse With Fabric Yo-Yos

Named for their shape, fabric yo-yos are simple to make with a yo-yo maker tool and pre-cut fabric rounds. According to the Alaska State Museum Quilt Exhibit, fabric yo-yos were popular in quilts from the 1920s through the 1940s, because women could make scrap fabric yo-yos whenever they had a little free time.

Fabric yo-yos combine easily to make a purse in any size, color or fabric imaginable. Simply select the fabric and sew a pile of yo-yos. When you are ready to assemble, gather the materials and make a cute purse in less than an evening.

Instructions

  1. Make the Liner

    • 1

Cut both sides of the liner fabric using a pattern to the desired purse size and shape, with a seam allowance included.

    • 2

Place both sides of the liner fabric together with the wrong side facing out and pin around the edge.

    • 3

Sew a seam all the way around. Turn the liner right side out, and set aside.

    Make Fabric Yo-yos

    • 4

Take the pre-cut fabric rounds and hand sew the yo-yos using a needle and quilting thread according to the yo-yo maker instructions.

    • 5

Hand sew a few stitches between two yo-yos to tack them together.

    • 6

Line up the yo-yo pairs on one side of the of the sewn liner to determine the final number of yo-yos needed to completely cover the liner. The yo-yos should be touching, but not overlapping. Set the liner aside for final assembly.

    • 7

Tack yo-yo pairs together to form rows, then connect the rows until you have two, complete purse-sized sections.

    • 8

Position the finished sides over the liner to make sure the yo-yos fit correctly.

    • 9

Place the two yo-yo sections with the wrong side (flat sides) facing together, then tack the yo-yos at the edges, leaving the top open to make the outside of the purse.

    Assemble the Purse

    • 10

Place the liner inside the yo-yo exterior of the purse. Pin the seam binding along the top opening of the purse over the liner and yo-yo exterior. Topstitch around the opening, sewing the seam binding, lining and yo-yo sides together.

    • 11

Mark the purse opening in four places where the handle ends need to go. Cut four pieces of seam binding to about 2 inches. Form each piece into a loop with the right side facing out. Sew the open end of each seam binding loop at each mark on the inside top of the purse.

    • 12

Connect purchased purse handles through the loops, and the yo-yo purse is done.
