How to Fix a Jean Skirt

A jean skirt is easily replaced. However, small repairs, or major repairs to a favorite jean skirt, often prove less expensive and more acceptable than purchasing a new one. To fix a jean skirt one must bear in mind the process to repair both a skirt and jeans or denim material. Possible problems to fix on a jean skirt include zipper replacement, repairing hem seams and patching holes.

Instructions

  1. Replacing Zippers

    • 1

Remove a broken zipper. Turn the jean skirt inside out and use small seam scissors or regular scissors to cut the seam holding the cloth piece of the zipper onto the jeans. Pull the zipper off the skirt.

    • 2

Sew the replacement zipper back into place at the front of the jean skirt. Unzip the zipper to make sewing on the new zipper easier to accomplish.

    • 3

Hand sew the zipper into place with a needle and thread and simple stitches. If the zipper is unnecessary or unused, consider sewing up the front of the skirt and leaving the existing, broken zipper hidden under the sewed-up zipper flap.

    Repairing Loose Hems

    • 4

Fold the hem back up into place at the length it should be.

    • 5

Iron the hem to make sure the material is in place. Pin the hem into place with safety pins to hold it into place while you sew.

    • 6

Hand sew the loose patches of the skirt hem or the entire skirt hem. Keep your new hem seam in line with the old or existing hem seam of the skirt.

    Patching Holes

    • 7

Cut a piece of iron-on denim patch to fit the hole or holes in the jean skirt. Turn the skirt inside out and iron the patch into place.

    • 8

Allow the material to cool to a comfortable temperature. Sew tiny seams along the edges of the holes in the jean skirt to hide the stitches and ensure the iron-on transfer does not fall loose.

    • 9

To make holes look intentional instead of accidental, sew one-quarter inch from the edges of the hole. Launder the skirt and allow the edges around the hole to fringe.
