How to Sew Nightgowns

Nightgowns come in many different styles and it's often difficult to find the right type for your needs. Nightgowns can also be expensive. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to sew your own inexpensive nightgowns using any color or style you prefer. All you need are basic sewing skills and common sewing supplies.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out two pieces of fabric that are each as wide as the widest part of your body and long enough to reach from your shoulders to your calves.

    • 2

Lay the fabric pieces on top of each other with the right sides facing. Sew the fabric together along the two longer sides, leaving a six-inch opening at the top of each side for the arm holes.

    • 3

Sew the top of the nightgown together, leaving a six-inch opening directly in the middle for the collar. Hem the bottom of the nightgown.

    • 4

Cut a three-inch slit in the back middle of the collar. Hem the collar and the slit. Sew a loop of ribbon onto one side of the slit and sew a button onto the other side of the slit.

    • 5

For the sleeves, cut two pieces of fabric each 14 inches wide and long enough to reach from your shoulder to just past your wrist.

    • 6

Fold one of the fabric pieces in half, bringing the longer edges together. Sew up the long edges (opposite the fold).

    • 7

Hem one raw edge of the sleeve and attach the other raw edge to one of the armholes. Repeat this process with the other sleeve.
