Things You'll Need
Instructions
Make your own child-size apron pattern.
Make a pattern with freezer paper for the apron to fit your child. See pattern below for about size 4. Here are the measurements for the main pattern piece. The total length is about 25 inches and the total width is about 20 inches. It is about 12 inches across at the top, and the armhole starts about 15 inches from the bottom. You will need three inch wide strips for the ties--four of them for top and back and they need to be about 20 inches long. These measurements allow for finishing all the seams.
Place the child's apron pattern on the fabric.
Pin the pattern to the fabric you have selected. Be sure the front is on the fold so you do not have a seam in the middle of the front.
Cut around the apron pattern.
Cut out the main piece for the child size apron. Then cut four of the three-inch by 20-inch strips for the ties.
Press the edges.
Using the iron, turn about 3/8 inch to the backside of the fabric all around the main apron piece. Fold a second time. Make about 1 inch hem at the top and bottom, and 5/8 inch hem on the sides.
Press the ties by turning about 1/2 inch on each side to the back on each tie. Then fold the tie in half and press with the iron for easy stitching.
Sew the seams.
Sew the seams you have pressed by starting at the sides. Then sew the top hem and bottom hem. Sew the ties lengthwise and tuck in the ends and stitch closed.
Add the ties to the apron.
Pin the ties for the neckline at about one inch in from the sides. Pin the ties for the waistline at about one inch down from the underarm points. You may decorate the apron or let the little ones decorate it with spills and finger paints. Press and wrap as a gift for your favorite child.
This child size apron works for years of play and fun, since the ties are long enough to allow room to grow.
