Hand Sewing Patterns for Beginners

Whether you are a mother of a 10-year-old who wants to learn to sew, or a beginning adult, sewing is a skill that will be used for a lifetime. Once you learn the basics, you will be able to use your skills in creative areas other than just garment sewing. Home décor, crafts and accessories can all be made with fabric and a sewing machine.
  1. Simplicity

    • Simplicity patterns have a line called "Sewing for Dummies" that offer beginners extra tips and instructions to make sure the projects are completed successfully. Start with pattern 5598, the quilted tote with accessories (see Resources below).

    Apron

    • Free instructions for a cleaning apron, "Clean Sweep Apron" comes with plenty of pockets. It's easy enough for a beginner to make. Find it at Organized Home (see Resources below).

    McCalls

    • McCalls patterns has a special line of easy sewing patterns called "Easy Stitch and Save." Most patterns offer several items and/or styles in one pattern. This pattern line offers just one easy-to-make item for beginners or those who like quick projects (see Resources below).
