How to Make a Baby Bonnet

Baby bonnets can be used on baby dolls or on babies. Bonnets protect babies from the sun, too. Typically during baptisms babies will wear a bonnet to dress up their outfit. Making a simple baby bonnet takes about an hour. Follow these steps to make a plain bonnet.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase white cotton fabric. Get a piece about 30cm x 30 cm or 12 inches square.Iron the material to eliminate creases or wrinkles.

    • 2

Lay the fabric on a table. Fold the end closest to you up 1 inch. Use white thread to sew the turned-up edge of the material, making a tunnel from one side to the other. Knot the thread.

    • 3

Stitch the top of the bonnet. Make one row of long stitches from the left side to the right. Pull on the thread, drawing the ends toward each other. The backside of the baby bonnet is now facing you. Determine how much you want to pull the ends toward each other before snipping of the end of the thread and knotting it

    • 4

Use a few inches extra of the white fabric to make the tie for the baby bonnet. It should be flat and no wider than 1/2 inch. Feed it through the tunnel you made until it comes out to the other side.

    • 5

Make a design. If you want to make the baby bonnet frilly you can add trim on the front where the tie is, stitching it to the bonnet. Avoid using a heavier material than what you used for the bonnet.
