How to Thread a Sewing Machine Needle

If you are the proud owner of a sewing machine, you may need some tips on how to use it. To start, you will need to know how to thread the needle. While this may seem to be a rather simple task, it can turn into a frustrating one if you've never threaded a sewing machine needle before. Even knowing how to prepare the thread before attempting to push it through the tiny needle hole takes special know-how.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your spool of thread on the spool holder of your sewing machine, and secure in place. (Some machines have a disc that slides onto the spool holder and against the spool of thread to hold it in place.)

    • 2

      Position the needle high.

    • 3

Pull thread through grooves, following the instruction manual that came with your machine. Typically, the thread will be pulled down, then up and through a loop, then down again.

    • 4

If your machine has one, pull the handle of the needle threader forward so the small hook goes through the needle hole.

    • 5

Pull thread across and under the small hook so that the thread is caught in the hook. Release the handle of the needle threader so that it pulls the thread through the needle hole. (You should have a loop of thread sticking out of the needle hole.)

    • 6

Using your fingers, pull thread all the way through the hole.

    • 7

If your machine is not equipped with a needle threader, thread your sewing machine needle by initially following the first three steps.

    • 8

Take the end of the thread in your hand and snip a piece off with the scissors. Wet the end of the thread, and gently pull the end of the thread through your thumb and index finger a few times, twirling it so that the end of the thread comes to a point.

    • 9

Insert the thread into the needle hole and pull the thread all the way through.
