Instructions
Pre-wash velveteen before sewing to re-shrink the fabric. Use the laundry method for the finished garment. Purchase 100 percent cotton velveteen.
Buy extra yardage for the garment pieces. Cut with the nap in the same direction. Purchase fine-gauge straight pins.
Determine the direction of the nap by running a hand over the fabric. Lay the fabric out in a single layer and pin the pattern pieces inside the seam allowance. Arrange the pattern pieces in the same direction using the printed arrows on the pattern.
Fit the sewing machine with a fine needle and set it for 10 to 12 stitches per inch with light pressure on the pressure foot. Use a cotton-wrapped polyester or polyester thread.
Tissue-stitch the seams to prevent the feed dog from marking the nap. Place pieces of tissue paper between the feed dog and the fabric, then stitch. Remove the paper after each seam is complete.
Finish the seams to prevent fraying of the pile. Use a serger on all raw edges or finish them with seam binding. Trim the intersection of seams to avoid bulk.
"Re-fluff" the finished item in the dryer for 15 minutes. Add several damp towels to help fluff the velveteen. Hang the finish garment on a padded hanger. Hang any unused fabric to prevent crushing the nap.
