How to Sew a Sash

Beginning sewers can make this stylish sash in very little time. The sash works up easily and can be finished in one day (or less). Choose the fabric that you like and that is easy to work with. Silks are not easy for beginners, but with patience, you can make a sash from any material. The sash in this article is one that is tied around the waist as an accompaniment to your ensemble.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry the fabric. Stretch the fabric out lengthwise on the wrong side and fold it in half. Measure the width of the sash to 8 1/4 inches and mark it with a pencil. The total width will be 8 inches wide after sewing, which leaves 1/4 inch for the seam allowance.

    • 2

Pin the fabric together after marking the 8 1/4-inch measurement. Cut the fabric along the mark line. Press the fabric along the fold line.

    • 3

Sew 1/4 inch in on both ends of the sash first. Sew 1/4 inch in along the bottom edge of the fabric, leaving a 6-inch opening in the center of the sash. Press the seams open by laying the entire sash flat and pressing one seam over onto one side of the sash and them ironing the other side flat against theother side of sash. Trim the corner on an angle to make the pointed edge when the sash has been turned right-side out.

    • 4

Turn the sash right-side out by gently pulling the fabric from one end through the 6-inch opening. Repeat the step with the other end of the sash. Lay the sash out flat and use the pencil tip to poke the corners of the the ends outward. This should be done gently so the material doesn't tear.

Smooth the sash and fold the opening edges under. Iron the edges and blind stitch the opening using the needle and thread.
