How to Make a Cloth Trick or Treat Bag

Fall is full of excitement for a child. Going back to school, watching the seasons change and beggar’s night are at the top of the list. You can help create a special memory for your child by creating a trick or treat bag that will carry your child through many fall seasons. With easily gathered materials the bag can be made in less than an hour and for under $10. You can use fabric to match your child’s costume or the traditional colors of black, orange or yellow. You can design the motif yourself or better yet, use your child’s art for inspiration.

Things You'll Need

Black denim
Thread to match
Heat and Bond
Fabric scrapes for embellishment
Pencil
Scissors
Permanent fabric

Instructions

  To create the bag cut two 11 x 14 inch pieces from the black denim or any color bottom weight fabric. Sew the two sides and bottom right sides together. Finish the raw edges on the sides and bottom of the bag. Turn the top of the bag down 1 ½ inch and iron. Turn the raw edge ½ inch under and top stitch all around the bag.

  Take two strips of 2 inch wide by 15 inch long pieces of fabric and sew the sides together with a ½ inch seam. Turn right side out. Iron. Attach the handles by placing them 2 inches from the edge of the bag. Pin them into place so the edge of the handle is parallel to the turned under edge of the bag. Top stitch in place.

  Use your child’s art, clip art or create your own line drawing to embellish the bag with. Keep the design simple.

  Trace the design on to the Heat and Bond bottom paper. Note that the design when ironed on the fabric will be in reverse and adjust the design accordingly. Shapes that overlap will need to be drawn separately.

  Iron the fabric to the Heat and Bond; bottom side of fabric to top side of Heat and Bond. Cut the shapes out. When all the shapes are cut, peel the backing off and place the design on the fabric. When you have the design in the position you want, carefully iron the design in place. Lower the iron down on the fabric and slowly iron the design. Do not move the iron across the design fast because that motion may cause pieces of the design to be pulled out of place. Iron for about 15 seconds.
