How to Make a Maternity Pillow

Maternity pillows come in many shapes and sizes. They come in the form of wedges, tear-shaped pillows and full-body supports. What works well for one expectant mom doesn’t always help another. You may need to experiment a bit to find what best supports your pregnancy sleep. You may want to make your own maternity pillow to save money. This can also be a way to get one that’s just the right size, shape and firmness for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the fabric in half. Place the right sides together. Draw an outline for the maternity pillow that’s slightly bigger than the size and shape you want. If you are using a ready-made pillow form--such as a foam wedge--put the pillow on top of the fabric. Draw a line around it that’s about 2 inches bigger than the pillow all the way around.

    • 2

Cut out both layers of fabric. Pin them together along the edges.

    • 3

Sew the fabric layers of the maternity pillow together, leaving an opening that’s large enough to stuff the pillow. If you are using fiberfill stuffing, you’ll only need a small opening. If you are using a foam wedge, you’ll need a larger opening.

    • 4

Cut small slits in the seam allowance around the curved edges of the pillow. Avoid cutting through the stitching. This will keep the edges of the maternity pillow smooth and even.

    • 5

Turn the maternity pillow right side out. Fill the pillow with your stuffing of choice. You may want to test out the pillow once you have it stuffed. See if it needs to be firmer or softer. Add or remove stuffing as needed.

    • 6

Turn the edges of the pillow towards the inside of the pillow. Pin them together.

    • 7

Hand sew the opening in the maternity pillow closed using a whip stitch.
