How to Sew a Hemming Stitch

A hemming stitch can be use if the hem allowance is finished with seam binding. It also useful if you don’t want the stitching to show on your fabric. Hemming stitches are usually used for bulky fabric or curvy material. Hemming stitches are also used for leather fabrics.

Instructions

  Thread your needle and fasten with a knot on the end.

  Hold your fabric with the folded hem facing up. Begin at the seam and fasten the thread in the seam allowance. Work from left to right with your thread and needle.

  Take a small stitch through the garment and pick up a single thread and fabric along the way. Fasten a knot inside of the hem.

  Place the needle between the seam binding and the garment and bring it out through the seam binding about ¼ inch in to the left of the first stitch.

  Take another stitch in the garment ¼ inch to the left of the second stitch.

  Continue alternating from seam binding to garment, and take several stitches on the needle. Draw the thread through the fabric. If you are sewing the stitch correctly, you will only see tiny stitches across the top of your hem.
