How to Make a Reusable Sandwich Wrap

In this age of green living, many people don't want to wrap their lunch in wasteful products, such as aluminum foil, plastic wrap or sandwich bags. If you are crafty, you can make your own reusable sandwich wrap and eliminate a little more bulk in the landfill each day.

  Draw a pattern or template for your wrap on plain white paper. Create an octagon with an 11-inch diameter. Depending on the size of the sandwich you typically carry, you can enlarge or reduce your template to fit your needs.

  Cut out two octagons from your fabric. You can use any relatively heavy fabric on the outside. The inside should be heavy canvas or vinyl-coated fabric.

  Stitch the two octagons together, leaving one side open for turning. Use a machine on a medium length stitch for best results. If you are sewing on vinyl, you might want to use a walking foot or a Teflon foot to avoid dragging and hanging the presser foot as you sew.

  Turn the octagon inside out. Clip the inner seams close to the stitching if your corners are not turning as you want them.

  Topstitch around your octagon, stitching the opening you left for turning closed. Before you stitch it closed, sandwich a small tab of Velcro in the seam. This will serve as your closure to your reusable sandwich wrap. The Velcro should be about 2-inches long.

  Fold your sandwich wrap sides in, then fold in the top and bottom flap. The Velcro tab should be on the top flap. Mark a spot on the outside where the matching piece of Velcro should be to form a good closure and tack it in place on the outside of the wrap.

  Enjoy using your earth-friendly reusable sandwich wrap. Be prepared to make several for schoolmates and coworkers who admire your handiwork.
