How to Sew a Patchwork Daisy Quilt Block

You can make a nine patch quilt block that looks like a daisy simply by choosing the right colors for the squares. This checkerboard-style quilt block is one of the easiest forms of patchwork to sew, since it only requires basic squares. You can make the quilt block any size you want, from postage stamp pieces to blanket sized, and you can also add borders around the daisy block to make it larger. Cotton fabrics work best for quilt blocks. You can use either plain colors or fabrics with small prints, such as calicos. How much fabric you’ll need depends on the size you want the daisy. If you only need small amounts of each color, you may want to buy fat quarters or remnants, or use up scraps from other projects. Use 1/4 inch seam allowance for all seams, and press all the seams toward the darker fabric.

Instructions

  1. Sew a Patchwork Daisy Quilt Block

Cut four squares of white fabric for the daisy petals and one yellow square for the daisy center. Cut four squares of contrasting fabric for the background. Make sure all the squares are the same size.

    • 2

Pin one background square and one white square right sides together. Stitch them together along one side, then press the seam flat.

Place another background square on top of the white square, right sides together. Stitch these squares together along the side, then press the seam flat. You should now have a row of three squares with the white square in the middle. Sew the other two background squares and a white square together the same way.

Place one row of white and background squares and the row of white and yellow squares right sides together. Pin them together, then stitch across the long edge. Press the seam flat. Sew the other row of white and background squares to the other side of the row of white and yellow squares the same way.
