How to Attach a Zipper

The zipper has an undeservedly bad reputation. People who are otherwise competent sewers tend to look askance at them and try to avoid projects that involve installing zippers. There's probably something to this aversion, as zippers do require a bit of finesse and a few special techniques. In many cases you can get away with buttons or a strip of Velcro if you really try. Zippers just aren't that hard, though, and in some cases there is nothing else that will work like one.

Instructions

Choose a zipper that is the right length for your project. It must be at least as long as the area you want to fasten. However, if it's longer than you want, you can shorten it. Measure the length you need from the top of the zipper, and sew across it at the end of your length, using quite a few strong stitches on top of one another. Finish your thread of securely, and cut off any extra zipper about half an inch below your modification.

    • 2

Fold the edges of the fabric where the zipper will be placed under and iron them flat. Fold down five eighths of an inch, or whatever you are using for a seam allowance on the rest of your item.

    • 3

Attach the zipper. Looking at the right side of the item, place the zipper under the area and pin each folded fabric edge to one side of the zipper. Bring the sides of the fabric so close that they are touching or almost touching before you pin if you want the zipper to be as inconspicuous as possible.

    • 4

On the right or wrong side of the item, attach the zipper by sewing down one side, across and up the other side. Make sure to use a thread that matches your project, because these stitches will be visible.

For greater security, consider adding a button and hole, hook-and-eye, or other small fastener above the top of the zipper (like the way that pants are generally fastened). A zipper is usually quite secure along its length, but can easily be pulled open if pressure is exerted at its top.
