How to Make a Quilted Doll Blanket

Sewing a quilted doll blanket is a great craft project for the beginning quilter. It is a simple design using as many or as few colors as you like. This can also be a great quilt project to use up some of your scrap fabrics or to give as a gift to a young girl in your life. Older children who are interested in sewing can manage this project as well.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 yard fabric

Instructions

    • 1

Cut all squares for the project so they're 3 1/2 inches square. This will allow for a 1/4-inch seam allowance on all sides, leaving you with a finished square of 3 inches. You'll need to cut a total of 56 squares for this quilt project.

    • 2

Lay out all the cut fabrics in the design that you like. The size of the quilt should be 7 squares by 8 squares. If you're using two colors, lay them out alternating every other one. If you choose to use more colors, lay them out so the design is pleasing to your eye.

    • 3

Sew the squares together so they form seven strips of fabrics that are eight squares long. Lay two squares together with the right sides of the fabric facing each other and sew one seam. Then continue adding one square at a time to the two you've already sewn until you've made the entire strip. Continue sewing this way for each of the seven strips.

    • 4

Attach the strips together by sewing the long sides of each strip. Simply lay one strip on top of another so the right sides of the fabric strips are facing each other, and sew a long seam along the length of the strip. Continue until all strips are sewn together. You now have the top of your quilt.

    • 5

Set the top of the quilt on top of a large piece of fabric. Again, keep the right sides together. Trim the bottom fabric piece to the exact size of the top. Then sew a seam along the entire outside edge of the fabrics, leaving a 6-inch gap open.

    • 6

Turn the fabrics right side out. Complete the doll quilt by hand-sewing that 6-inch open seam shut.
