Decide what size quilt you want to make your Yellow Brick Road quilt. This will help you determine what size blocks to make. When you're making a lap quilt, smaller blocks are better, but if you're making a bed size quilt larger blocks make the job go faster.
Choose the theme for your quilt. The theme is the style and color of fabric that you want to use. If you want to create a true Yellow Brick Road quilt, you should use an assortment of different shades of yellow.
Cut out a variety of squares and rectangles. A good way to do this is to decide what size you want your finished blocks to be. Out of paper, cut several squares of that size. Cut those paper squares into a variety of squares and rectangles. Keep the pieces from each square together so that they match up when you sew your blocks together.
Sew all the block pieces together. Make as many blocks as necessary for the desired size of your quilt.
Arrange the blocks on a large surface. See which order you like them in. Sew the blocks together into rows. Then sew the rows together to make your quilt top. Add a border around the edge to finish the quilt top.
Layer the quilt top with the backing fabric and the batting and tie. Bind the quilt with a coordinating fabric to complete the quilt.
