How to Repair a Broken Belt Loop on Denim Jeans

A broken belt loop on denim jeans can seem tough to fix because of how thick denim fabric is. If you have a good sewing machine, however, you can obtain a heavy-weight needle and denim-strength thread and simply set the machine to a zigzag stitch setting to easily repair the broken belt loop.

Things You'll Need

  • A sewing machine
  • A heavy-weight needle
  • Denim strength thread to match denim
  • Scissors
  • A small patch of denim

Instructions

    • 1

Repair the hole where the belt buckle broke away from the denim if a hole exists. To repair the hole, place a small patch of denim behind the hole.

    • 2

Set your sewing machine to a tiny zigzag stitch and sew back and forth across the hole to secure the patch. Follow the grain of the jeans to make the stitching almost invisible.

    • 3

Trim the excess thread ends and the excess denim material on the patch if desired.

    • 4

Place the belt loop back where you would like to sew it down. Set the sewing machine to a wide zigzag stitch, setting the length to zero and the width as wide as possible.

    • 5

Place the foot on top of the end of the belt loop that needs to be sewn down. The foot should pin the belt loop to the blue jeans. Leave the jeans in place and stitch several stitches back and forth. The zigzag stitch will stitch back and forth across the material without you moving the jeans.

Trim the excess thread and enjoy your newly-repaired belt loop.
