Things You'll Need
Instructions
Pick the tank top that you want to use. Make sure that it is clean and has no holes or other defects that will affect your finished purse.
Iron your tank top so that it is completely flat. Wrinkles in the fabric will make the tank top harder to sew.
Decide on how large or small you want your purse to be. You can just sew at the bottom and have a large purse or make it smaller by sewing farther up the bottom.
Flip the tank top inside out and pin the bottom shut. Make sure that the bottom is pinned an inch or more from the edge so that you have a good seam on the purse. Sewing too close to the edge of the fabric can come undone.
Finish the top of the tank top turned purse. You can either just use the tank straps as the handles or make handles. If you decide to make handles, fold the top of the tank top over where you want to edge of the purse to be.
Iron and pin the top edge of the tank top so that is perfectly flat.
Cut off the excess fabric. Make sure to leave an inch of fabric for the seam.
Sew around the top of the purse. Make sure to sew back from the edge or the purse may come unraveled. A 1/2-inch or more is enough.
Cut two equal lengths of ribbon or other fabric for the straps of the purse and pin them to the top edge of the purse. Fold the ends of the ribbon over and sew through both layers. This will ensure that the ribbon doesn't fray.
Sew the straps onto the purse. The best and easiest way to sew the straps on is to sew X's over the top edge of the purse and the straps.
Decorate your new purse with anything you have handy. Beads, ribbon or fabric paint are all great choices for decorating your new purse.
