How to Make a Dog Leash

If you're tired of looking at the same old lead when walking your dog, personalize your leash. Simple supplies and sewing skills will add personality to your journeys with your pooch. The leash should be long enough to accommodate your dog's size and strength and should be made of sturdy material. Make your dog the star of the dog park with a snazzy new leash.

Things You'll Need

Nylon webbing
Grosgrain ribbon, 2 inches longer than the length of the webbing
Scissors
Matching thread
Swivel hook
Sewing machine

Instructions

  Cut nylon webbing to length you want, plus 9 inches.

  Cut grosgrain ribbon as long as the webbing, plus 2 inches. Sew the grosgrain ribbon to the nylon webbing along both edges of ribbon. Fold 1 inch of ribbon over both ends of webbing to cover raw edges.

  Make the handle by measuring down 7 inches on one end of nylon webbing. Fold the webbing over and pin in place. Sew a straight line approximately 1/2 inch from edge. Sew another straight line 1 inch away from first line, toward the curve in the handle. Sew an "X" between the two lines for extra security.

  Put the other end of the nylon webbing through the swivel hook. Fold the webbing over 2 inches and pin. Sew straight line in place approximately 1/2 inch from the folded edge. Sew another straight line 1 inch toward the swivel hook. Sew an "X" between the 2 for added security.

Sewing
