How to Sit Properly While Sewing

The thrill of sewing quickly becomes painful and tiresome when you lack the tools to help you sit comfortably and properly. Without following the rules of proper posture while sewing you will likely experience pains in your neck, back, shoulders and arms. Make these few adjustments to your work area to ensure that you sit properly while sewing and minimize any discomfort.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the right workstation. Tables should be between 24 to 28 inches high and about 19 inches deep. Additionally, tables should include a footrest with space to include the sewing machine foot pedal.

    • 2

Look for tables with rounded edges. You will likely experience wrist discomfort and possible nerve damage when resting your arms against tables with sharp edges for prolonged periods. You can also purchase a cushioned pad to place on the edge of the table to prevent blood flow reduction.

    • 3

Test the table before you make a decision to purchase it. Be sure that it allows you to position your legs comfortably underneath it while still providing enough room to move. The table should never rest on the tops of your thighs.

    • 4

Use an ergonomic sewing chair. Choose a seat that has an adjustable height, lumbar support and arm rests. Many of the aches and pains that people feel after sewing for an extended amount of time is because of poor seating.

    • 5

Position the chair close enough to the workstation so that you can sew comfortably without having to reach for your machine. Additionally, your forearms should be level with the height of the table.

    • 6

Place the foot pedal as close to you as possible and be sure to keep your other foot flat on the floor.
