How to Make a Foundation Quilt

A foundation quilt uses all of the scraps from previous projects to create something new. It is also perhaps one of the most creative ways to make a quilt because of the infinite variations possible within each single square. Read this eHow to learn more.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a pile of scraps you wish to use. Iron them so they lay flat.

    • 2

Cut 6 ½ inch squares from any lightweight fabric such as muslin.

    • 3

Lay a scrap so that it is right side up on the square. Allow it to hang off the left side as well as the top and bottom ¼ inch.

    • 4

Set a second scrap over the over the first scrap so that the wrong side is facing up. Be certain to have the piece overhang ¼ inch like the first scrap. Pin them in place.

    • 5

Place the square on the sewing machine and sew a seam on the right edge of both scraps.

    • 6

Press the second scrap back so that it lays right side up beside the first scrap. You'll see that the unfinished edges on the left side of the second scrap and the unfinished edge of the first edge are now finished.

    • 7

Lay a third scrap on top of the second scrap so that it is wrong side up. Sew a seam on the right edges of the second and third scraps. Press the third scrap back so that it now lays right side up.

    • 8

Repeat until you have filled the square. Press the square so that all of the pieces lay flat.

    • 9

Turn the square over so that the covered side lies down on the table.

    • 10

Cut a new square of plain, light fabric that's ¼ inch larger all the way around than the first square.

    • 11

Sew the two squares together, the covered side of the first square out.

    • 12

Begin the process covering a new 6 ½ inch plain, light fabric square. When you have made enough squares necessary to make the sized quilt you desire, sew the squares together to form your finished quilt. Sew on the new ¼ overhang created by the scraps and the second light-weight square.

    • 13

Experiment with other designs. Lay the scraps on the diagonal, being careful to trim the excess while leaving the 1/2 inch overhang all the way around. Assemble the squares so the finished quilt is diagonally striped.
