Buy the fabric from which you wish to make the dress. A knit fabric would work best, though as this dress has many variations, you may experiment for yourself. Whether the fabric is printed or solid is up to you.
Cut four pieces: a circle skirt, two "straps" and a waist band.
Determine the width of the "straps" by measuring from under your arm to the center of your bust. The length should be approximately one and a half times more than your height (this measurement does not have to be exact-you can round it up or down to make it easier for yourself).
Decide how long you wish to have the skirt, and cut it at that length. This is the circle skirt piece. The diameter of the circle is twice the desired length of the skirt. The waistband does not have to be an exact measurement, as you can cut it to length as you're making the dress.
Turn the skirt so that the outside is facing in.
Overlap the straps 3 to 4 inches at one end.
Fold the waistband in half and line the edges with the raw edges of the skirt.
Lay straps on top of the waistband at the front of the skirt, and pin them in place.
Sew the straps and the waistband to the skirt.
Play around with the straps. You can draw them up over your shoulders, making the front of the dress resemble a 50's style frock, then twist them so that they cross your back, and tie the remainder around your waist, or wrap the straps around your torso in a vaguely toga manner, or cross them in front like a cabana dress. The possibilities are endless.
