How to Make a Car Visor CD Holder

When you are driving and need to change the tunes in your car's CD player, having CDs right on your visor is not only convenient, but it keeps you from getting distracted when you should be watching the road. Making a CD visor for your car requires a little know-how with the sewing machine.

  • Glue, if using cardboard

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Materials

    • 1

Make a template. Take a piece of paper that is big enough to cover your visor, and trace your visor the best you can. Use a legal-size sheet or a piece of newspaper so the paper is big enough. Take some measurements as well, recording the exact dimensions of your visor.

    • 2

Find a supportive material for the base. Sturdy plastic is best, but cardboard will work as well. You must cut the base about the width of one CD case and the length of the fullest part of your car visor. Use the template to make sure your CD holder will not hang over any part of your visor.

    • 3

Pick your fabric. Choose a fabric that won't scratch, such as felt, for the parts the CDs will actually touch. Cut eight to 12 pieces of fabric each the size of a CD jewel case. Keep in mind that a jewel case is not a perfect square.

    • 4

Cut about one inch off the top of each rectangle. For a more professional look, finish the edge. Your pieces of fabric should now be an obvious rectangle. These pieces of fabric will become the pockets.

    • 5

Cut two pieces of fabric slightly wider and about 1 ½ inches longer than your plastic or cardboard base. Put one aside and use the other to attach the pockets to it. Your pocket base should be the same width as your pockets.

    Make the CD Holder

    • 6

Lay the pockets on the pocket base. Start from the top, pin as you go, and space evenly. If you finished the edges, they should appear on the top in the direction you intend them when they're complete. The last one should line up evenly with the pocket base. Keep in mind that you are going to have some extra room at the top of the pocket base.

    • 7

Sew your pockets to the pocket base one at a time, starting on the bottom. Make sure you are only sewing one pocket at a time. Move the already attached pieces out of the way before you start the next one.

    • 8

Sew the sides. Do a basting stitch first. Check to make sure your CDs fit into the pockets.

    • 9

Attach your pockets to the back and add elastic. Start by laying your pockets face up. Place a piece of elastic two to three inches longer than the depth of your pocket piece about two inches from the top edge, with the end flush with the side of your pockets. Pin it in place and do the same thing two inches from the bottom. Put the back panel on top with the side that you want showing down.

    • 10

Pin the long edges and sew them together, along with the bottom of the CD visor. Leave the top open.

    • 11

Turn inside out and add your sturdy plastic or cardboard base. If it is a little loose, sew again on the inside of the seam.

    • 12

Finish off the top however you like. Add fabric for a cap or simply fold the sides over and glue to the top.
