Things You'll Need
Instructions
Look first at home decorating fabrics for your slipcovers. These fabrics are wider than average, and many are treated to make them wrinkle- and stain-resistant.
Choose the weight of your fabric according to the expected level of use of the fabric. Choose a heavy fabric if the furniture will see everyday use; choose a thinner fabric if the furniture will be used infrequently.
Obtain a large swatch of the fabric before purchase if possible. The salespeople at fabric or home decorating stores will cut a piece of the fabric for you at no charge.
Take the swatch home with you and put it up against the draperies, rugs and other furniture items to see if the fabric's design and color coordinate with your existing color scheme.
Calculate the yardage needed for your slipcovers. Use the amount recommended if you have a slipcover pattern. Purchase a little extra fabric in case of construction mistakes or errors in measurements.
Look at fabrics that are not classified as home decorator fabrics. If you see a fabric you like and it's heavy enough to withstand the expected level of use, then use it. You're the one who will live with your choice, so you should choose what you like.
Be prepared to buy extra yardage if your chosen fabric is 45 inches wide or narrower. This extra yardage will be necessary to provide the needed coverage.
