Things You'll Need
Instructions
Establish a good reason for running a soapbox derby to make the event worthwhile. Consider using the derby as a massive social event that allows your community to socialize and give support to those taking part or, better still, organize the competition as a charity event to raise much-needed funds for local causes. Define your soapbox derby by giving it an appropriate name and if the event goes well, run the event every year to give your community something to look forward to.
Form an organizing committee and give members individual roles to make the process easier. Hold regular meetings with all committee members present so that views and ideas are exchanged. Avoid trying to organize a soapbox derby single-handedly to alleviate the risk of running over time with the organization process. Involve as many local people as possible to create a genuine sense of involvement.
Consider sponsorship to raise more money for your soapbox derby, especially if you intend to make a donation to charity. Ask local companies for a small fee that sees their names advertised on the carts or sell advertising space in a race day program that lists the schedule of events. Remember to sell advertising space on any track-side banners or fences to maximize a steady flow of cash for your event, but avoid being too ambitious if your aim is to raise money for worthy causes.
Establish a list of rules and regulations that all participants must adhere to. Consider restrictions on the carts themselves so that the event is more competitive and remember to include safety requirements such as helmets, knee and elbow padding, gloves and protective clothing. Separate events into age groups to make the soapbox derby more enjoyable for children and provide competitors with a map of the circuit so that they can familiarize themselves with the layout in advance.
Talk to your local government office to find out which permits you will need to hold the event, especially if you intend to close down sections of your neighborhood so that the race can take place safely. Make sure that permits are in place well in advance of the soapbox derby.
Promote your event with leaflets, advertisements in local publications and by building a website. Ask newspapers for free advertisements if you're raising funds for charity in exchange for free advertising on carts or in your schedule of events. Remember that the main objective of the event is to have fun and improve community spirit, so ensure all participants receive a certificate of participation instead of spending funds on expensive trophies for race winners.
