Recognition
While some Cub Scout groups only award trophies for the first-, second- and third-place winners, consider awarding certificates to honor all the other boys. This helps to build self-esteem while also acknowledging the effort each boy into their car. Certificates can be creative, such as "Flashiest Car."
Location
Location is important for the Pinewood Derby. Some groups like to host the event outside, at a park or similar outside event, to keep in line with the Boy Scout theme. For Pinewood Derby's in warmer states, such as Florida, consider an indoor environment to keep everyone cool.
Include everyone
While the event is mostly held for the boys in the Cub Scout group, some groups open the event to all family members. Having races for family members such as fathers, brothers or any other family member will encourage families to work together on making their Pinewood Derby cars.
Refreshments
Provide refreshments or lunch to the scouts and their families because the Pinewood Derby is typically a daytime event. You can have a cookout and provide hamburgers and hot dogs, or provide a healthier meal consisting of fruits and vegetables. As the Pinewood Derby is an outside event, keep plenty of water on hand to prevent dehydration, especially in warmer states.
