How to Disassemble Vivitar Lenses

Photography enthusiasts enjoy customizing their cameras, especially with aftermarket lenses. Vivitar offers numerous lens types for long- and short-range photos. However, lenses depend upon a clean interior optic surface for reflecting light effectively while focusing on a subject. At times, a Vivitar lens may require disassembly to access a dirty or cracked interior optic.

Instructions

    • 1

Detach the front element retaining ring using a spanner wrench. Use caution while removing the ring to ensure that the part does not become warped or bent from removal force.

    • 2

Detach the rear element assembly -- residing behind the retaining ring -- with a spanner wrench.

    • 3

Unscrew the focus ring stop screw from the lens' exterior surface with a small screwdriver.

    • 4

Remove the focus ring from the lens' body by turning it with your hands.

    • 5

Unscrew the two forward focusing element assembly screws with a small screwdriver. The screws reside near the focus ring threads. Pull the internal front focus assembly out from the main lens housing.

    • 6

Detach the access cover screw with a small screwdriver. This screw resides on the tripod collar ring. Rotate the tripod collar ring around the housing to remove the six hidden screws with a small screwdriver.

    • 7

Pull the Vivitar lens apart, revealing the middle lens area. Place a spanner wrench on the exposed lens frame and turn the assembly. The lens should thread outward, ready for cleaning or replacement.
