Things You'll Need
Instructions
Use a squirrel nest box that's made from cedar wood. Make sure the box is at least 20 inches in height and 6 inches in width and depth and has an entrance that is 3 inches in diameter.
Put down sawdust at the bottom of the nest box to create a comfortable bed.
Hang your squirrel nest box at least 10 feet above the ground, in a mature, healthy tree, with the hole close to the tree trunk. Use aluminum nails to attach the box against the main stem of the tree so it's protected from the elements by the tree leaves and branches. Avoid hanging the box in a dead, weak-looking tree because these may easily blow away in the wind.
Keep the area around the tree that contains your nest box in its natural state. Avoid removing trees and bushes or cleaning the ground.
Place a squirrel feeder near the tree to attract squirrels. Use attractants such as corn, sunflower seeds or walnuts to attract squirrels. As an alternative, place your nest box in an area that contains trees and shrubs that provide seeds, nuts, cones and acorns that squirrels feed on.
