Through the use of convex lenses (rounded on both outside lenses), a magnifying glass can make tiny details viewable to the human eye. The object is magnified, or enlarged, as light hits the edge of the lens and pushes it toward the center of the lens. Magnifying glasses, which are typically mounted to a handle or slide viewer, also come in different strengths of magnification. A 10x magnifying glass can, viewed at the proper distance, magnify an object or detail up to 10 times its normal size.
