How to Make a Bow Kite

Building your own kite is not only cheaper but also more satisfying when you see your handiwork fully airborne. Kites can be flown anywhere from beaches and parks to the comfort of your backyard and can provide hours of fun in the sun for you and your family.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a length of masking tape around each end of the longer piece of wood. Etch a notch at the base and tip of the length of wood and lay it vertically on a table or flat surface. Ensure both notches run in the same direction so you can fit the string properly.

    • 2

Measure 10 inches down from the top of the length of wood and lay the shorter piece of wood horizontally on top of it at this exact point.

    • 3

Bind the wooden sticks together with a length of string. Ensure the string is tightly tied and wrap duct tape around the knot for added stability.

    • 4

Pull a length of string around the circumference of the sticks, starting from the bottom of the kite and finishing at the same point. Ensure the string rests in the notches at either end of the vertical wooden stick.

    • 5

Pull the string tightly around the kite frame and tie it together. The bars will now be slightly bowed. Stick pieces of duct tape over the notches to make sure the string doesn't come loose during flight.

    • 6

Place the wooden frame on a plastic bin bag and cut the bag so it roughly fits the size of the frame. Fold the plastic bag edges over the string and secure in place with duct tape. The plastic should be tightly fitted so it's aerodynamic.

    • 7

Cut a length of string measuring anything from 10 to 40 feet depending on how high you want your kite to fly. Tie pieces of colored cloth or decorative paper at intervals along the string for added aesthetic effect. Your kite is now ready to hit the skies.
