Types of Kevlar

Kevlar is the trademarked name for para-aramid synthetic fiber that was developed by DuPont in the 1970s. While the high-strength material was initially used to replace the steel incorporated in race car tires, today it is more versatile. It is a material that has applications in many different settings.
  1. Kevlar Elastomer

    • Kevlar Elastomer, engineered by Dupont, is a type of branched p-aramid pulp that is produced in a variety of rubber applications. Elastomer provides more strength than traditional fillers, such as silica, by increasing the stiffness in the material with minimal differences in heat buildup. Elastomer can be found in tires, seals, belts and rubber-coated fabrics.

    Kevlar Fiber &Filament

    • Kevlar fiber and filament come in a wide variety of applications, depending on the construction process. One of the areas where this can be used is in hard armor, such as Kevlar helmets. Kevlar helmets can be manufactured with 100 percent Kevlar because they are made with a high-toughness resin combined with a Kevlar fiber that produces a helmet that is 20 percent lighter while maintaining the same performance.

    Kevlar Thread

    • Kevlar can be manufactured in thread form and is commonly used to make mattresses. Since mattress threads that are made with Kevlar are able to retain their strength at high heat, they help the seams and taped edges remain sealed during a fire.

    Life Armor Products

    • Kevlar fibers protect law enforcement officers and those in the military from ballistic projectiles, fragmentation and hand-help weapons that could otherwise puncture the body. In this regard, Kevlar can be found in bullet proof vests, body armor and armored vehicles.
