How to Tell If an EZ Go Is a Series Cart?

Electric golf carts typically come in two types: Regenerative Braking, or Regen, models and Series models. Regenerative Braking models use the mechanical energy from halting the vehicle to power the battery. Using a Regen model can give golfers greater travel distance for those particularly long pars. However, Series carts can generally achieve higher speeds and increased power over their Regen cousins. For golf aficionados using EZ Go brand golf carts, there are a few simple checks to determine whether a golf cart is a Regen or a Series model.

Check for a switch under the golf cart's driver seat. Regenerative braking, or Regen, carts will have either a Tow/Run switch or a Run/Maintenance switch. If no switch is present, the cart is a Series cart.

    • 2

Examine the cart's motor for a speed sensor wire. If the cart has a speed sensor wire protruding from the motor's end head, the cart's motor is a Regen motor. If not, it is a Series motor.

    • 3

Compare the size of the terminal bolts on top of the motor. There are four terminal bolts on a golf cart motor. If the four bolts are identical in size, then the motor is a Series motor. If two bolts are smaller than the others, it is a Regen motor.

    • 4

Assess the motor's field coil windings. A Regen motor has round coils composed of thinner wire wrapped circularly around the field coil. A Series motor has thicker wires arranged in a rectangular shape around the coil.
