Schwinn Stingray Specifications

The Schwinn Stingray is a bicycle that was manufactured by Schwinn Bicycle Company, which was founded by German born engineer Ignaz Schwinn in Chicago. The Stingray model was first released in 1963 to wide popularity and became the first high riser bike to be mass produced before it was discontinued in 1982. However, in 2004, Schwinn released the Sting-Ray Three and Ghost Five-Speed as well as a purple classic series Sting-Ray.
  1. Sting-Ray Three

    • The Sting-Ray Three, as the name infers, is a three-speed bike which serves as an upgrade to the 20-inch street series that gained fame in 1963. With the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) listed at $400, as of 2004, features included a mounted shifter and a diamond frame with a large gusset. The bike also included internal cable routing as well as the signature Exclusive Sturmey-Archer Three-Speed Hub.

    Grey Ghost Five-Speed

    • With a MSRP of $550, as of 2004, the Schwinn Ghost-Five speed was an upgrade to the Sting-Ray Three. Instead of three-speed gears, the Grey Ghost had an internal five-speed hub and came with a Sturmey Archer Twist Shifter. Braking was also stylish in this bike, with both front and rear ends boasting drums.

    Purple Classic Sting-Ray

    • The most cost affective of the 2004 Sting-Ray series was the Purple Classic Sting-Ray. Mimicking the original, the purple classic consisted of one-speed and had an MSRP of only $270. As a modern day interpretation of the 1963 model, the purple classic is a high-rise with a raked-out fork.
