How to Kill Nematodes

There are more than 80,000 species of nematodes; some pray on people, while many others pray on plants. For gardeners, nematodes that invest and ruin plants are difficult to eradicate, and nearly impossible to detect before the plants bloom. So what is a gardener to do about nematodes? Stop them before the plants are ever planted, of course.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the soil for planting by turning it over and creating a smooth surface, but do not plant anything. Allow the soil to settle for one week.

    • 2

Before planting any vegetables, which nematodes tend to prey on, buy marigold plants and plant them in the bed where you plan on harvesting vegetables.

    • 3

Allow the marigolds to grow and prosper through a full season. Nothing special has to be done to the marigolds other than to let them flower.

    • 4

After the marigolds have gone through a season, remove them from the ground and dispose of them. Leave the soil alone.

    • 5

When the next planting season arrives, plant whatever you wish. The marigolds planted the previous season will kill most of the nematodes that inhabit the soil.
