Battlebot Rules

BattleBots is a robotic combat competition in which the last robot that is able to move and function is declared the winner. BattleBots are large, heavy, remote-controlled robots that contain a number of impact, cutting or flame weapons, depending on the class of competition.

There are three classes of competition. College and professional are consider the two higher general classes, while high school class has greater limitations on weight and weapons to encourage safer construction.
  1. General Rules

    • The general BattleBot rules apply to the professional and college classes of BattleBot building, but weight limits are different. For non-walking robots, college class robots are limited to 120 pounds and professional class robots are limited to 220 pounds. StompBots are limited to 160 pounds for college and 300 pounds for professional.

BattleBots must be able to fit through an 8-foot-by-8-foot door and fit within an 8-foot-by-8-foot square on the floor. BattleBots must be capable of a straight line speed of 2 feet per second and be able to turn around within a 12-foot circle.

Fragile, radioactive and toxic materials are not allowed and any plastic foam must not be exposed. Official rules define a number of other configuration requirements, such as requirements for flame fuels and the way flames are ignited.

    High School Class Rules

    • Many of the requirements for high school class BattleBots are the same as for the two general classes, but the weight limits are lower. High school class BattleBots are limited to 120 pounds for non-walking robots and 160 pounds for StompBots. Flame and smoke devices are not allowed on high school class BattleBots, nor are laser sights.

    Tournament Rules

    • BattleBot tournament rules define the ways teams are formed and operate. They define the tournament classes and restrict the number of teams a particular individual can participate on. Tournament rules define robot eligibility and entry requirements and restrict robot components to a single, competing robot. Parts may not be shared between two robots in two competitions. The rules are very complex and best perused before trying to enter a tournament.
