Barrel Racing Rules & Regulations

Anyone who has ever been to a rodeo knows it wouldn't be complete without the barrel racing event. This is an event that is primarily for women, though men can enter as well. It is a timed event that requires the horse and its rider to complete a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels which have been placed in a triangle formation. Those with the fastest time wins, although there are penalties the competitors must be aware of. It's an event that has no age limititations; anyone from four to 80 can enter.
  1. The Horse

    • Your horse does not have to be a registered horse for you to compete. You can also ride any horse of your choice, whether it is yours or not--you only need permission from its owner.

    Your Position

    • You will draw a number for your starting position. If you ride out of position, you are automatically disqualified.

    Lines and Positions

    • The position of the barrels and the designated start and finish lines are marked. They have to remain the same for the entire event.

    Starting Gates

    • There is a designated starting gate for the event. If there is more than one gate, all riders have the right to choose what gate they will enter from.

    Barrel Pattern

    • The barrels have to be spaced a certain number of feet apart from each other. The first and second barrels must have at least 15 feet between them and the side fence, the third barrel must have 30 feet between it and the back fence and there must be 30 feet between the first barrel and the finish line.

    Timing

    • Your time starts as soon as you cross the start line and ends when the pattern has been completed and the finish line is crossed. If a pattern is missed or a barrel is knocked over, you will receive no time.
