Baby Fin Whale Size
Fin whales are the second biggest creatures on the planet, second only to blue whales, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service. At birth, baby female whales, which are referred to as "calves," generally weigh in the range of 4,000 and 6,000 pounds -- the weight of some fully grown African elephants. In terms of body length, young calves are approximately 20 feet in length. Reproduction usually takes place once in every two to three years. Female fin whales experience gestational spans of 11 to 12 months. They give birth to a single calf per gestation.
Adult Fin Whale Size
Although baby fin whales start off as pretty enormous mammals, they become a lot bigger when they're mature. Adult fin whales weigh in the ballpark of 80,000 to 160,000 pounds. Body length for fin whales is typically somewhere between 75 and 85 feet. Female fins are usually a tad longer than males -- by about 5 or 10 percent.
