How to Build a Quail Roost

A member of the pheasant family, quail are a small- to medium-size game bird found in woodland areas throughout much of the world. Considered a delicacy, several species of quail are hunted in the wild and raised for their meat and eggs. Not overly taken to flight, quail thrive in captivity; the birds require only an enclosure to keep them from wandering off and a simple A-frame roost built from wooden dowels.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the halfway point on seven, 8-foot-long by 1/8-inch-diameter wooden dowels with a tape measure. Cut the dowels in half with a saw, creating 14, 4-foot-long dowels.

    • 2

Lay two dowels parallel to each other, spacing the dowels 4 feet apart with a tape measure. Run four dowels perpendicularly across the first two dowels, creating a ladder-like pattern. Place the bottom rung 10 inches from the bottom end of the perpendicular dowels and, working from the bottom up, space each successive dowel 10 inches from the previous rung.

    • 3

Fasten the ends of the lateral dowels to the vertical dowels with pieces of baling wire and a pair of pliers. To prevent the birds from being injured, bend the ends of the wire downward along the lateral dowels with the pliers. Repeat the process with six of the remaining dowels, creating two identical ladder-like racks.

    • 4

Secure the top ends of the vertical support sections of the two racks together with wire and the piers.

    • 5

Spread the bottom sections of the rack to a distance of 4 feet. Run the two remaining dowels horizontally along the bottom of the vertical supports, placing one dowel at each end of the roost. Wire the dowels together with the pliers.

    • 6

Place the roost in the quail pen.
