How to Get Rid of Old Mosquito Bites That Have Left Black Spots

Mosquito bites, besides being painful and itchy, can also leave you with a lasting reminder of your run in with a mosquito, in the form of a scar and maybe even a black dot. The skin is a living organ, however, and as old cells come to the surface of the skin and die, new cells grow underneath. This process will eventually bring the dark spots to the surface, and they will disappear. There are, however, a few different things you can do to speed the process up.

Things You'll Need

  • Rosehip oil
  • Tomato or lemon
  • Olive oil
  • Exfoliator
  • Toothpaste
  • Colloidal-oatmeal

Instructions

    • 1

Treat the mosquito bite twice a day with rosehip oil. Rosehip oil is a common ingredient in many cosmetic products, and helps treat discoloration that has resulted from scarring.

    • 2

Rub the inner flesh of a tomato, lemon or a similarly acidic fruit or vegetable on the dark spot, and leave the fruit or vegetable juice on for several minutes. These kinds of fruits and vegetables will help to lighten the mark, and the acidity will encourage the removal of dead skin cells, as well as the growth of new skin cells.

    • 3

Apply olive oil to the bite once a day, which will also help to lighten the dark spot left behind.

    • 4

Use an exfoliator once a day to help get rid of dead skin cells and to encourage new skin cells to grow.

    • 5

Apply toothpaste to the mosquito bites. The toothpaste will help to dry the skin out, speeding up the process of new skin growth. The dry skin can be removed with an exfoliator.

    • 6

Take a colloidal-oatmeal bath. Colloidal-oatmeal is oatmeal that has been ground very fine. The bath will help to get rid of insect marks. Just be sure that the bath is only warm, and not hot, as hot water may intensify itching, if the bites are still itchy.

    • 7

Avoid the sun or UV light, and if you must go out, use a sunscreen. The UV light from the sun or any other source will make the spots darker.

    • 8

Visit a doctor or dermatologist. Certain prescription products, like topical hydroquinone, can be helpful in treating dark spots left by mosquitoes.
