How to Use a Baby Pool for Yellow Sliders

Yellow sliders, more specifically, yellow-bellied sliders, are pond turtles found in non-seasonal bodies of water in the southeastern United States. They require plenty of water to move around and at least one basking surface. As these sliders grow to be around 10 inches long, a baby pool is not too large of a habitat. However, a baby pool will need alterations before it can house a yellow-bellied slider.

Things You'll Need

  • Kiddie pool with depth of at least the length of the turtle's shell
  • Turtle bank
  • UV-B lamp and heating bulb
  • Tank filter

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the pool with clean water. Place the turtle bank somewhere along the edge of the pool. This is where your turtle will bask.

    • 2

Securely fasten with clamps or braces the heating lamp over the yellow-bellied slider's basking area. Shut off the lamp at night or put it on a timer that will shut it off at night. If the pool is outdoors in an area that's at least 95 degrees during the day, the lamp isn't necessary.

Attach the filter to the side of the pool. Most filters hang on the edge or clip on. You'll need a grounded power source nearby in which to plug in the filter.
