Prosimians
The word "prosimian" means "before the monkey," according to the Conservation International website. Prosimians include about 50 species and are typically found in Africa, Asia and Madagascar. Examples of prosimians include lemurs, galagos and lorises. These primates have large eye sockets, small heads and an elongated nose. Prosimians also have a special grooming claw on the second toe of each hind foot. Their eyes have a reflective layer that gives them better night vision, and they have comb-like teeth they use to groom themselves. Prosimians' arms tend to be shorter than their legs, and they have strong hind legs for jumping.
Monkeys
More than 200 species of monkeys exist in the world and are generally found in countries such as Africa, Japan, Asia, India, and Mexico, as well as Central and South America. Monkeys range in size from 4 inches to 3-feet tall. Their arms are of equal length or sometimes shorter than their legs, and they use their hands and feet to hang onto branches. Most monkeys have visible tails. Monkeys are active during the day. Monkeys also have a short nose, a weak sense of smell and large teeth.
Apes
Apes include about 14 species and are typically found in Africa and Southeast Asia. These primates include bonobos, gorillas, chimpanzees, gibbons and orangutans. Apes are usually much larger than monkeys and prosimians and include some of the largest species of primates, such as gorillas. Like monkeys, they are also active during the day, have a short nose and a weak sense of smell. Apes have a broad chest and arms that are longer than their legs. They do not have visible tails and do not have hair on their face.
Humans
Humans are some of the most intelligent and complex primates. They differ from other primates because they walk on their hind legs, according to the ESkeletons website. Humans also have larger brains than most primates, are capable of complex languages and have the ability to regulate their body heat over long periods of time. Although many species of humans once existed, they became extinct. Homo Sapiens are the only species of human still in existence, and they live in almost every habitat on Earth.
