How to Make a Drop Shot Rig

The drop shot rig is used as a deep-water fishing technique for catching finicky or pressured bass. This type of fishing technique works well in clear deep-water lakes and reservoirs and where fish are suspended off the bottom. By rigging the worm weedless you can also use this method in brush and around other cover such as submerged rocks and tree stumps. The drop shot rig will often catch fish when reaction baits just won't do the trick.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed the line through the eye of the hook from the barbed side. Tie the hook to your line using a Palomar knot leaving a length of line extending past the hook 16 to 20 inches. When tied properly the hook should stand out horizontally to the line with the open end of the hook facing up.

Tie a drop shot sinker or a bell sinker to the end of the length of line that extends past the hook using a Palomar knot.

    • 3

Rig a worm or finesse bait to the hook Texas-style for a weedless approach, or through the head of the bait.
