Things You'll Need
Instructions
Contact your state's Department of Fish and Wildlife (sometimes called Fish and Game) to determine whether you need a permit to stock your pond with rainbow trout. Ask them for a list of state-registered fisheries that supply and deliver rainbow trout.
Determine the size of your pond by performing a rough measurement of its length, width and depth to get an idea of approximately how many trout can be raised in the pond. A one acre pond with a depth of 8 feet that stays full all summer can support around 300 rainbow trout. Fewer trout should be stocked if the level of the pond drops during the summer months because less oxygen is available as the water becomes warmer.
Search for any outlet from the pond where fish could escape. Place a wire mesh screen in front of any outlets you find. If there is an inlet to the pond, trout may travel up it to spawn, but will return to the pond afterwards.
Place an order with the fishery of your choice and arrange delivery of the rainbow trout. A common size to plant in a pond is 6 to 8 inches long. The fishery employees are trained and equipped to perform a safe introduction of the rainbow trout into their new home.
