The Best Way to Set Up a Rabbit Habitat

Wild rabbits and hares are losing their wilderness. As such, they need habitats. If you are looking to set up a rabbit habitat on open land, build them brush piles. Place the brush piles near open food sources and away from any tall tree lines. Trees give the rabbits' predators, such as owls and hawks, a place to perch and wait for them. Each brush pile should measure approximately 5 feet high and 15 feet wide, or about the size of a car. Brush piles are made from natural materials, logs, stumps and branches.

Instructions

    • 1

Build a base for the brush pile using large logs, tree stumps or (optionally) stones at least 6 inches in diameter. In designing the base, take care to create more than one entrance and exit among the logs.

    • 2

Lay out the next layer of logs on top of the base in a crisscross fashion. These logs should have about a 1-foot diameter.

    • 3

Add a third layer of logs, again crossed over the second layer. Use progressively smaller logs for each layer. For this layer, use logs that range from 6 to 10 inches in diameter.

    • 4

Keep adding layers, with the top layers consisting of branches and limbs to thicken out the brush pile. Place the various brush piles between 20 and 30 yards apart.
