How to Raise Domestic Pigs

Raising domestic pigs is a fun and rewarding experience. According to an August 2009 article in the "Daily Mail," an increasing number of people are raising domestic pigs as a source of food or as pets. With the proper attention to space, shelter and nutrition, you can raise fully grown, healthy domestic pigs in about six months.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare space for the pigs. A minimum of 900 square feet is recommended. Pigs need shelter from heat, cold, rain and snow. Fully grown pigs weigh 200 to 250 lbs, so allow at least 12 feet of shelter for each pig.

    • 2

Prepare fencing. Consider installing "pig-proof" woven wire fencing or an electric fence. Pigs will try to escape through fencing by digging, so ensure the fencing is secure.

    • 3

Purchase piglets from a reputable breeder or farmer. Look for piglets around 6 to 8 weeks old that seem alert and energetic, with smooth hair and pink skin.

    • 4

Nurture the pigs with adequate food and water. Each pig needs 2 to 4 gallons of water per day. Pigs can be fed manually or via automatic watering systems. Premixed feeds are available to ensure proper nutritional balance. Pigs should be fed in a trough.

    • 5

Maintain your pigs' health. Pigs require deworming twice during their first six months. Speak to your veterinarian to ensure you receive the proper deworming medication. Maintain a clean environment for your pig to avoid external parasites and diseases.

    • 6

Determine the best lifestyle for your pigs. If you are keeping pigs as pets, allow your pet adequate space for a healthy lifestyle. If you are raising domestic pigs for food, most pigs are ready for slaughter at six months when they reach a weight of 200 to 250 lbs.
